Day Trips from London by Train
One of the most amazing things about the UK is being able to travel so easily between cities, especially from London. Here are some of my favorite places to go when I need a break from the city. These are all quick enough to get to that you could easily include them in a longer itinerary in London.
To book train tickets, I use Trainline or Trainpal. If you are planning a lot of train travel, check if you’re eligible for a railcard to get discounted tickets.
Brighton
Train journey: 1 hour - 1 hour 30 mins
One of the most popular day trips from London is the charming seaside city of Brighton. This is my favorite place to go whenever a summer heatwave hits the UK. It’s so lovely to grab lunch from a nearby restaurant or cafe to enjoy on the beach before swimming in the sea.
If the weather’s not quite warm enough for a swim, head to The Lanes, an area of unique independent shops and art displays.
Bath
Train journey: 1 hour 20 mins
A day in Bath is as close as you’ll ever get to being transported into a Jane Austen novel. This beautiful, historic city is much quieter than London, but still has a lot to explore.

Oxford
Train journey: 1 hour - 1 hour 30 mins
Home to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Oxford is a magical place to explore even if you’re not a student. It’s surreal to just walk around the campus, but you can also book tours to see the impressive libraries and different colleges.
Oxford also has some amazing shops, restaurants, and greenspaces to explore.
Windsor
Train journey: 15 - 30 mins
If you’re interested in the Royal Family, Windsor is the ultimate day trip to learn about the history and pageantry of the monarchy. While touring Windsor Castle is the main draw for tourists, there is also a lovely High Street with shops and cafes. I highly recommend Cinnamon Cafe for their amazing cinnamon buns!
Cambridge
Train journey: 1 hour - 1 hour 30 mins
Another beautiful university city, Cambridge is a dream to explore and wander. I loved touring King’s College Chapel, wandering around the Fitzwilliam Museum, and watching the iconic punting boats float down the River Cam.
Check out my full Cambridge guide here.
Canterbury
Train journey: 1 hour 30 mins
Canterbury is a gorgeous village that feels like something out of a fairytale. Explore the storybook streets of shops and cafes and take in the historic, wonky buildings. I highly recommend touring the cathedral to see the impressive architecture and Hogwarts-esque cloisters.
Seven Sisters Cliffs
Train journey: 1 hour 20 mins + 30 min bus journey
For a breath of fresh air, you can’t beat the stunning Seven Sisters Cliffs. From London, it requires a train journey to Eastbourne, a bus ride to the visitor centre, and a bit of a walk - but I promise it’s well worth it! Be sure to spot the iconic cottages featured in Atonement and cross the pebbly beach to swim with the cliffs towering above.
For more of a workout, you can also hike along the cliffs to get spectacular sea views.
I will continue updating this list as I embark on more adventures outside of London. Message me on Instagram if there are any day trips you think I would love!
