Nestled between one of London’s most breathtaking parks and one of the world’s biggest botanical gardens, Richmond on Thames is a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city. With charming shops tucked down cobblestone alleys and spectacular views overlooking the river and countryside beyond, it’s no wonder this area has set the scene for Ted Lasso’s adventures in England.
Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Richmond, including coffee shops, independent stores, beautiful places to stroll, and where to stay if you want to spend even more time here.
Kew Gardens
No visit to Richmond is complete without a wander around the impressive grounds at Kew. This historical botanical garden is the most biodiverse place on earth, with the world’s largest living plant collection housed in its greenhouses and sprawling forests. While it’s a spectacular place to visit in the spring and summer when everything is in full bloom, it is also wonderful in the colder months. In the autumn, climb up to the Treetop Walk to see the London skyline framed by the changing leaves. When the winter blues have taken hold, a stroll in the heated greenhouses creates a tropical escape just moments from the city.
The Prince’s Head
Ted Lasso fans will recognize this charming pub and as a frequent location in the series and its location on the edge of Richmond Green makes it the perfect stop after a brisk stroll. The Prince’s Head serves classic pub dishes and is decorated with a few nods to AFC Richmond.
Gelateria Danelli
When you’ve finished up at The Prince’s Head, take a short stroll to Gelateria Danelli. Known for authentic Italian gelato and the most decadent hot chocolate in London, it’s a must-visit for a sweet treat as you explore Richmond.
The Open Book
If you need a new read, The Open Book is the perfect cozy bookshop to browse during your day in Richmond. With a selection of new releases and local interest titles, you’re sure to find the perfect book to enjoy while taking in the fresh air in Richmond Green or sitting in one of the area’s lovely cafes.
Long Black
For an excellent coffee, head up Richmond Hill to Long Black. This friendly little coffee shop serves Australian-style coffee and authentic New York-style bagels from the east London bakery, Papo’s. Grab a seat by the window to people watch as locals stroll with their dogs up to the scenic lookouts on the hill.
Knit With Me
Across the street from Long Black lies a haven for crafters and knitters. Knit With Me is an adorable yarn shop with such a friendly staff who can help you choose from their impressive selection. They also host events and classes and offer their upstairs space as a place to bring your knitting and settle in for a few hours.
Richmond Hill
Offering one of London’s most beautiful viewpoints, Richmond Hill overlooks the Thames and the Surrey countryside. Particularly beautiful on a sunny, autumn day, watch the sun set over the river, or set up a picnic on the hill as the leaves fall.
Richmond Hill Hotel
If you want to wake up to the views of the Thames, the Richmond Hill Hotel is an elegant stay at the very top of the hill. With spacious rooms and a great on-site restaurant, it’s the perfect place to turn a day trip to Richmond into an overnight escape.
Richmond Park
Whether you plan a long leisurely stroll or simply drive through, it’s hard to believe Richmond Park is just outside bustling London. With hundreds of free roaming deer that have lived in the park for centuries, visitors get a rare opportunity to experience nature up close.
